Welcome to Manavhela Ben Lavin Nature Reserve

THE FEELING OF FREEDOM

MANAVHELA BEN LAVIN NATURE RESERVE was proclaimed a nature reserve in 1976. The reserve lies approximately 12 kilometres south-east of the town of MAKHADO (Louis Trichardt), in the Limpopo province. Comprising an area of approximately 2500ha the farm Vygeboom spruit 286 LS was inherited by Mrs Lavin after Mr Ben Lavin passed away in 1970. The farm was subsequently donated to the Wildlife Society. After a successful land reform process ownership of the reserve was handed to the current owners the MANAVHELA community. Before its proclamation the reserve was farmed with cattle and game for over forty years which, together with absence of annual fires as a management tool, partly explains the very dense bush (mainly sickle bush) presently found in the reserve.

The ideal bushveld break to smooth out the wrinkles of big city life stress – MANAVHELA BEN LAVIN NATURE RESERVE – Offering the eco-tourist the opportunity to explore and experience the natural diversity of this 2500 ha reserve at his/her own leisure. Situated in the foothills of the Soutpansberg mountain range, an easy four hours drive from Johannesburg. The reserve is transverse by a network of good game viewing roads that may be travelled on any time of day or night.

18 km of walking trails and the freedom to explore the entire reserve on foot or mountain bike, ensures close and personal contact with nature. The Khongoni overnight trail meanders through the different landscapes and habitats. MBLNR is an excellent birding area and for the serious birder some Soutpansberg birding hotspots are within comfortable reach. Numerous mountain bike trails will serve the needs of the more energetic visitor. Guided night walks allow the visitor to share in some of the secrets of the bush.
Take the opportunity to experience Old world peace and hospitality. At sundown the rustic comfort of MANAVHELA BEN LAVIN provides the ideal setting for relaxation and reminiscing over the day’s events by campfire.

MANAVHELA BEN LAVIN is also an ideal stop-over for the northern Kruger national park, Mapungubwe national park and Zimbabwe or as base camp to explore the unsurpassed variety the Soutpansberg has to offer the eco tourist.
